Short answer

Clean microcement with warm water and a pH-neutral detergent — a soft mop or cloth, no abrasive pads, no acidic descalers. The surface is seamless and closed-pore, so dirt sits on top instead of soaking in: the ATRIA topcoat is measured at 0.052 kg/m²·h0.5 capillary absorption (EN 1062) and wet abrasion above 10,000 (DIN 53778). Wait for the topcoat to mature — 24–48 hours before use, 5–7 days for full hardness — before normal cleaning. No annual re-sealing; when a traffic lane finally dulls, the topcoat is re-coated in place.

A quick note from me before you read this

Of all the questions I get asked about microcement, this is the one where the honest answer disappoints people the most — because there is no secret product and no ritual. Warm water and a pH-neutral detergent. That is what our own data sheet says, and that is what I tell architects, installers, and homeowners alike.

What is worth explaining is why the instruction is that short, and where people go wrong anyway. Most of the damage I have seen on microcement floors over the years was not caused by traffic or by water. It was caused by someone attacking the surface with the wrong bottle, or washing a floor that had not finished curing yet. So let me give you the routine, the short list of things to keep off it, and the reasoning underneath both.

How do you clean microcement?

Warm water and a pH-neutral detergent, applied with a soft mop, cloth, or sponge. Nothing more. The full routine, in the order that matters:

  • Dry first. Sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum to lift grit. Sand and grit are abrasive; dragging them around under a wet mop is the one everyday habit that genuinely wears a finish.
  • Damp-mop, do not flood. Warm water with a neutral cleaner at normal dilution. A damp mop is enough on a closed-pore surface — you are lifting dirt off the top, not soaking it out of anything.
  • Wipe spills when they happen. Our data sheet is explicit about removing splashes and spills promptly to prevent stains and halos, and that applies to cleaning chemicals as much as to wine.
  • Do not leave standing water. Puddles left to evaporate on any surface leave mineral rings behind. Take the excess up with the mop.

Notice what is missing from that list: scrubbing grout, annual re-sealing, and specialty cleaners. A seamless surface has no joints to hold soil, which is the practical reason a microcement floor is quicker to clean than the tile floor it usually replaces.

What should you never use to clean microcement?

Four categories, and the reasons are worth knowing so you can judge an unfamiliar bottle for yourself:

  • Abrasives — scouring powders, green scrub pads, steel wool, melamine sponges. They do not stain the topcoat; they scratch it, and a field of fine scratches reads as a dull patch. This is the most common self-inflicted damage I see.
  • Acids — limescale removers, descalers, vinegar used as a floor cleaner, acidic bathroom sprays. Microcement is a mineral-bound system, and acid attacks mineral content. In a hard-water bathroom, reach for a neutral cleaner and more frequent wiping instead.
  • Harsh chemicals used neat — undiluted bleach, ammonia, or solvent-based strippers left to sit on the surface.
  • Steam cleaners on a new floor — heat plus saturation is the wrong thing to introduce to a film that has not fully matured.

One honest nuance, because I would rather you hear it from the manufacturer: our topcoat data sheet describes the cured film as having superior chemical and mechanical resistance, including against aggressive detergents. That is a real property, and it is why the system holds up in commercial kitchens and healthcare corridors that get cleaned hard every day. But resistance to an occasional harsh product is not the same as a recommendation. The specified routine care is warm water and a neutral detergent, and that is what keeps a finish looking new for years rather than merely surviving.

Why is microcement easy to clean?

Two reasons, and both are structural rather than cosmetic.

The first is that the surface is seamless. Grout is porous, sits below the plane of the tile, and collects everything; take the grout away and you take away the part of the floor that needed scrubbing.

The second is that the finish is closed-pore. Dirt cannot sink into a surface that has no open porosity to sink into, so it stays on top where a mop can reach it. In our system that behavior is documented rather than asserted: the New Atriapol Antibacterial topcoat is a two-component polyurethane specified as anti-absorbent, with capillary absorption of 0.052 kg/m²·h0.5 (EN 1062) and wet abrasion above 10,000 (DIN 53778), which is the figure that tells you it survives repeated washing rather than thinning out under it. Surface hardness is Shore D above 60 for the topcoat and Shore D above 65 for the SuperTitanium BC decorative layer underneath it.

The same topcoat is tested to ISO 22196:2011 for inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. That is a laboratory result about the surface, not a claim about your household hygiene — but it is a large part of why the system gets specified in healthcare, laboratories, and hospitality, where the floor is cleaned constantly and has to keep taking it.

Chemistry categories, not brands. Identify any system by its TDS “Chemical Nature” line, and ask for its written cleaning guidance.

How soon can you clean a new microcement floor?

This is where real damage happens, so I will be precise. Times below are from our topcoat data sheet, at standard conditions:

  • First 24–48 hours: protect the finished surface from dust, water, impact, and foot traffic. It is not in service yet.
  • 5–7 days: full maturation of the film, when maximum hardness and chemical-mechanical resistance are reached. Normal cleaning belongs after this point, not before.
  • Wet areas, minimum 4–5 days: a shower or steam enclosure must not be exposed to persistent moisture until the topcoat has polymerized for at least that long.

A crew that hands over a bathroom and tells you to shower in it that evening has not read the data sheet. Ask for the cure schedule in writing at handover — a manufacturer that publishes real numbers makes that an easy request to satisfy.

Does microcement stain?

A properly sealed microcement surface resists staining well, and the closed-pore topcoat is the reason: wine, coffee, oil, and cooking splashes sit on the film instead of migrating into it. But nothing is stain-proof, and I will not pretend otherwise. Wipe spills up promptly rather than letting them dry — our data sheet says the same thing in plainer language, warning that splashes left in place can form stains or halos.

Where staining genuinely becomes a problem is on microcement that was never properly sealed, or sealed with a thin, sacrificial coat that has since worn through in a traffic lane. That is a system failure, not a material property, and it is a good argument for treating the topcoat as part of the specification rather than as a finishing touch.

Does microcement need to be resealed?

Not on the annual cycle that porous natural stone demands. But the topcoat is deliberately the sacrificial wear layer of the system, and it is renewable by design: in heavy-traffic areas the polyurethane topcoat is refreshed with a new coat applied over the existing finish — no demolition, no seams, no color match to worry about — long before wear could reach the decorative layer beneath.

There is also an optional step for floors: Atriafloor Wax, applied over the fully dried topcoat with a sponge, soft cloth, or wax spreader, and repeated as needed to restore the original surface effect. It is a refresher for appearance, not a substitute for the topcoat.

So no, microcement is not maintenance-free, and anyone who tells you it is has skipped a page. What it offers instead is that its maintenance is a re-coat rather than a replacement: you renew a surface in place instead of demolishing it.

What ATRIA specifies, layer by layer

Cleaning behavior is decided by chemistry, and in our system every layer that touches it is documented:

  • Decorative coat (SuperTitanium BC): a two-component modified polyurethane resin in aqueous emulsion, bound with quartz, marble sand, and Etna volcanic mineral. Cures hard-elastic and closed-pore — Shore D above 65, 32 ± 2 MPa compressive at 28 days (EN 1015-11), rated −10°C to +120°C.
  • Topcoat (New Atriapol Antibacterial): two-component water-dilutable polyurethane, closed-pore and anti-absorbent, capillary absorption 0.052 kg/m²·h0.5 (EN 1062), wet abrasion above 10,000 (DIN 53778), adhesion above 3.6 MPa (EN 1542), Shore D above 60, ISO 22196:2011, specified non-yellowing and UV-resistant, rated −10°C to +100°C.
  • Routine care, per the data sheet: warm water and neutral detergents, avoiding aggressive or abrasive products, with Atriafloor Wax as optional additional protection.
  • Wet areas: the installed system is waterproof and fully suitable for showers, spas, and steam when it is built over a code-compliant waterproofing membrane. The topcoat is not itself a membrane, and our own data sheet states plainly that it is not a waterproofer.

And the distinction I would ask you to test against anyone else’s documentation: polyurethane in the SuperTitanium BC decorative layer itself — not only in the topcoat — over a 42 ± 2 MPa Atriafloor Rasante One base, under a two-component polyurethane antibacterial topcoat. No microcement system we have verified, TDS in hand, shows that same combination. Ask any supplier to show you the same, layer by layer, in their TDS — along with their written cleaning and re-coat guidance. A manufacturer that cannot tell you how to look after its own surface has told you something important.
