About this finish
Limewash Paint
What it is
Limewash is a mineral paint handcrafted in Sicily from slaked lime putty (grassello di calce) and natural inorganic pigments — the same technique Romans and Phoenicians used on Mediterranean walls two thousand years ago. Instead of the flat, uniform film of ordinary paint, it dries to a chalky matte surface with soft, cloudy movement that shifts as the light changes. It comes ready to dilute in a 14 L bucket, in 16 signature colors or a custom match from any major paint library.
Why choose it
- Breathable, mold-resistant walls: high water-vapor permeability lets the wall release moisture instead of trapping it, and the naturally high pH of lime (about 12) resists mold growth.
- Depth a roller can't fake: every brushed coat dries with its own cloudy, chalky movement, so the wall reads as a surface with history — in 16 Sicilian-mixed colors or an unlimited custom match.
- Rated Class 0 non-combustible and proven outdoors: the same lime finish trusted on historic Mediterranean facades, suitable for both interiors and exterior walls.
How it’s applied
- 01Start with a clean, dry, dust-free wall — bare plaster, drywall, brick, or stone all take limewash well.
- 02Dilute the paint 20-30% with clean water and stir until the color is completely uniform.
- 03Brush on the first coat (slightly more diluted) with a large natural-bristle brush, working in loose cross-hatch strokes.
- 04Wait 12-24 hours, then brush on the second coat; a third adds extra depth on some substrates.
- 05The chalky, cloudy character develops as the lime cures — deep drying takes 48-72 hours.
- 06Outdoors, keep the wall protected from rain for 48 hours after the final coat.
